From Roland Thro:

I’m planing to make my annual trip to Nelson county GW national forest over Memorial weekend. Some of you know the area because of the well known off-road Shoe Creek trail that is sadly now closed, but theres a less known and much longer trail called Big Levels.
Big Levels is a 5 hour+ long trail system located about 15 minutes from http://crabtreefallscampground.com. I run the trail with my unlifted FJ with a full set of skids but would not recommend it for inexperienced off roaders, you well get some good pin striping on your vehicle and you will encounter some deep mud hole and challenging rock gardens. I truly believe Big Levels is one of the best off road trail in Va. the trail takes you through thick Rhododendron forests that will be in bloom memorial weekend and ends on the Blue Ridge parkway, with some side side trail that are even more changing.
We stay at Crabtree Falls Campground (we’v booked site 11 already) that has a nice trout stream running through it and a well stocked trout pond just down the road. If this sounds like something you would like to do I recommend making reservations as soon as possible Crabtree Falls camp ground is very popular so it books up fast at http://crabtreefallscampground.com
