Promoting Responsible Four Wheeling

Trip Report : 04/27/2013 Wheelin' For Hope

TripReports This is not the typical CORE trip report because this particular trail ride was not sponsored by CORE. The Woodland Wildfires, a Relay for Life of Nelson County, VA team, has hosted an event since 2009 called Wheelin’ for Hope. The event is in honor and in memory of all friends and family who have been affected by cancer. All proceeds from this trail ride are donated to the American Cancer Society. As of 2009, Wheelin’ for Hope has raised and donated over $50,000, to include this year’s event.

Trip Report : 01/01/2012 New Year's Ride

TripReports January 1, 2012. What a perfect day for CORE members to start the New Year with good friends and good wheeling. Every year CORE members get together on day 1 to solidify wheeling good fortunes for the next 12 months. This year would be no exception. In the past, CORE had chosen an easy stock friendly trail, but as luck would have it, they're all closed now. So what better way to start things off than a trip to Rausch Creek!

Trip Report : 11/25/2011 Rausch Creek Black Friday Run

TripReports It has been a tradition now for most of CORE’s 10 plus year existence to do something special on Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season and busiest day of the year. While 90% of the population heads into the city, the malls, and shopping centers, CORE members and guests head in the opposite direction; away from the hustle and bustle and into the woods for a relaxing and challenging day in the woods with our four wheel drive vehicles and good friends. This year was no exception.

Trip Report : 07/23/2011 MAFWDA Potomac State Forest Camping And Trail Ride

TripReports Friday July 22 the weather in the Washington DC metro area was a scorching 103 degrees with a heat index approaching 120 degrees! Fortunately Preston Stevens, President of Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association (MAFWDA) wisely planned a family camping and four wheel drive outing in Potomac State Forest in western MD. This trip is an annual outing for MAFWDA. Every year around this time of the year, MAFWDA coordinates with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) for a work weekend of volunteer work in the state forest that also includes hitting various fire trail clearing fallen trees, low hanging limbs and ensuring that they are all passable; and of course camping and having a good time with friends and family.

Trip Report : 01/01/2011 New Year's Ride

TripReports Another new year and another terrific start for CORE members to start with a great day with friends enjoying a rejuvenating day. Before we start this tale (which I hope falls into the category of good reading), I feel an obligation to call your attention to some relevant background.

Trip Report : 06/12/2010 German River Exploratory Run

TripReports It had been a while since we’d been offroad, either individually or as a club. There had been some commercial events but not especially to my liking. I got to thinking about places where we used to go but hadn’t in a while. One such place was the German River district of the GWNF. It had been long enough that I couldn’t remember the landmarks but an old GPS file contained a couple of saved landmarks that were labeled as GR.

Other Important Issues : 11/06/2010 Patuxent River Cleanup

Other On the chilly first Saturday in November, Capital Off Road Enthusiasts (www.core4x4.org) joined forces with Chesapeake Paddlers Association (www.cpakayaker.com); Greater Baltimore Canoe Club (www.baltimorecanoeclub.org); Patuxent Greenways LLC; and the Patuxent Riverkeeper (www.paxriverkeeper.org) to once again attack an illegal dumpsite on the banks of the Patuxent River in Harwood MD. You may recall that we had worked with these same groups to clean here in April 2009. (See http://www.core4x4.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=105)

Trip Report : 04/16/2010 Outer Banks Cape Hatteras National Sea Shore

TripReports The official dates for our spring visit to the Outer Banks (OBX) and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Recreation Area (CHNSRA) were April 16-18 this year but some arrived early and got some extra fun packed into the weekend. I hope to accurately include some of that. But first a little setup.

Trip Report : 01/01/2010 Grandma Holman's New Years Day Run

TripReports Like many clubs, CORE traditionally schedules a ride on New Years Day. Generally, a nearby trail is chosen for its proximity and its relative ease in order to allow for a later start but still letting everyone get home at a reasonable hour in case January 2 is a work day. But sometimes a surprise gets thrown into the mix. We also call this Grandma Holman's ride as my Grandma firmly believed whatever you did on New Years would be repeated throughout the year. Our New Years Day ride is planned to be an enjoyable ride with as many good friends as possible.
