Green Ridge Meeting / Trail Ride Combo!

When planning for the CORE May 2025 meeting, I learned that our go-to restaurant location, Rock Bottom in Bethesda, has permanently closed down. With that, we decided that for the May meeting, we’ll do a meeting/trail ride combo!

The benefit of this is for CORE membership requirements, it counts as 2 events towards new membership or renewal!

Attendees:

  • Jendra – Jeep JK
  • Brett & Stella – Jeep Cherokee
  • James – LR3
  • Toby – Crosstrek Wilderness
  • Dawn – 4Runner
  • Matt – 4Runner
  • Steve – Frontier
  • John – Jeep Gladiator
  • Brian Souhan – Jeep Gladiator

So with that, we made plans to meet at the HQ Ranger Station. We decided to have the meeting first, over by the overlook, which was a perfect spot to sit down. There’s a nice table there, and space to gather and chat without being in the way of other visitors coming to see/photograph the overlook.

We had a good meeting, talked about some past and upcoming trips, and voted in 2 new members! Welcome Brett and Brian! There were some recent severe weather events that had caused downed trees, and flooded Western Maryland and the surrounding areas, Green Ridge included. With this, Brett and Stella had been helping with local recovery efforts, and along with Matt, made a call out to the club for supplies to donate to the recovery. CORE stepped up and the members/guests in attendance brought enough stuff to completely fill up Brett’s Jeep!

After the meeting, we set off on a course that tours the southeastern end of the forest. It was a nice casual drive through the forest, with the occasional stop to cut or clear some debris from the trail. Nothing too major though! The day prior, Matt and Brian had camped out, and did a bit of exploring, and did a lot more clearing work with some larger fallen trees.

We did come across a campsite that folks had left behind with an active fire still lit. Luckily our folks spotted it, and we stopped to put it out.

We kept on touring the forest, and stopped at the Point Lookout Overlook for our lunch break. After hanging out for a bit, we proceeded along the trail.

We got down to the lower end in the valley in the southeastern area, where the trail gets a little more rutted out, and we saw some evidence of the stream crossings getting a bit more washed out as a result of the weather the area had experienced. One crossing in particular had a pretty steep departure angle as we made our way across, causing my Tundra to bottom out in the rear, and catch my aluminum side step! Definitely the most challenging bit of Green Ridge! Still easily traversable by any 4×4, but surprisingly steeper than we had seen in the past.

After that, we continued along, and wrapped up our day. It was an awesome trip out with a great group of folks!
