Wolf Den Black and Blues | Capital Off Road Enthusiasts, Inc.

Wolf Den Run is a great opportunity in Western Maryland for a variety of vehicles to have fun off-road. With trails from easy to challenging, it offers something for different build types. With the goal of tackling some of the hardest trails in the park the following group assembled:

Jendra, Marco, and Ben camped at the Wolf Den Run Campground for the weekend, which offers limited amenities but is reasonably priced and close to the action. Friday night offered an incredible moonrise!

Saturday morning Ken, Brian, and Dawn arrived at the campground to join in the trail ride with Dawn riding shotgun with Ken.

The first section of park for the day was Potomac Rocks. We did blue 2103 (Jeep Badge of Honor Trail) then made our way to black 2301 which we did counterclockwise. The trail was wet with traction a challenge throughout the day. The ruts are deep and a challenge for smaller tired vehicles. On the rocky climb near the end most of the group needed to winch due to the lack of traction forcing a line that caused our rear differentials to get hung up on a large rock. The only ones who were able to make it without a winch were Marco, who had recent experience on the trail and was brave enough to drive close to the drop off at the edge of the road to avoid the rock and Ken who was nimble enough in the TJ to pick his way around the side away from the edge of the road.

After completing 2301 we headed to black 2304 and took it all the way back to 2301. Previously 2304 had been nearly undriveable due to a deep washout. Once we arrived back on trail 2301, we took it clockwise to 2302. 2302 is a steep one way uphill that takes a committed send to make it all the way to the top…no crawling this climb! From there we headed out of Potomac Rocks stopping at a picnic area near the parking lot for lunch.

After lunch we hit the black climb off Coal Haul Road (1204?) up and back on our way to pavement. Ken and Dawn headed home while the rest of the group decided to do some wheeling in Huckleberry Rocks. There we did green 0101 to a short fun steep climb at 0102 back to 0101 up to blues 0101 and 0109 (counterclockwise). 0109 has some fun rock steps and tight squeezes interspersed with a few mud puddles. At this point Brian decided to head home, and the rest of the group headed for a splash in the Wallows. The Wallows is the place to go if you feel your vehicle needs a healthy coating of mud! At one point Ben ran out of clearance due to deep ruts and needed a short winch out of one of the puddles!

From there it was back to camp to enjoy one more beautiful evening before heading home on Sunday morning. It was a great weekend of fun wheeling that everyone thoroughly enjoyed!
