Hi CORE,

Just following up on the planning for a trip to Assateague Island. It’s being planned as a day trip, so we’re starting a little later (10:30), so no one has to get up at 5AM to make it.
I’m in Chevy Chase and MapQuest is saying a little over 2.5 hour drive.

I’m also included a few link with info on Assateague.

There are plenty of YouTube videos to give you a feel for what the drive is like.
Please let me know if anyone else is joining us. So we don’t start without you.

Just got off the phone with the Ranger and everything should be good, but he did suggest that we check Friday night in case there’s any storm damage between now and then that might close part or all of the trail.

Bad news is that they’ve raised their rates. You can only buy an annual pass and they are $90.

We are all coming from different places, so we should meet at the parking lot on the island at a little before 10:30. The ranger said we could get the permits there. The address on the web page is 7206 National Seashore Lane, Berlin, Maryland 21811, but the ranger says that’s their headquarters and that we should go a little farther down the road across the Verrazano bridge to the parking lot on the right. If your GPS takes coordinates, the parking lot/permits is 38 deg. 14’ 13.68”N, 75 deg. 8’ 17.12”W. My GPS had trouble with the address, but found the Verrazano Bridge without problem (not the Staten Island one).

Bring your own lunch. The draft plan is to drive out as far as they let us, find a quiet place for lunch and then drive back. All the time looking for interesting side trails that won’t get us kicked off the beach.

I’ll set my CB to channel 20.

Looking forward to it – Mike O’Grady
